Description

This course offers a detailed coverage of the techniques used in the exploitation of the unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. Since massive resources are present in the unconventional oil and gas fields including Shale gas/oil, Coal Bed Methane (CBM) and tight sands, the oil industry is paving the way to exploit these resources; including bring new technology and training their staff.

Background information about the main differences between conventional and unconventional reservoirs is established. In order to successfully evaluate the potential of these resources, the integration of the various techniques such as; engineering, petrophysical, geological, and geo-mechanical properties is utilized to determine their commerciality.

Further, the technology of Multi-stage Fracing of Horizontal Wells (MFHW’s) should be carefully optimized to enhance the economics of the Unconventional. Methods of evaluating performance and reserves of the tight/unconventional reservoirs will be discussed including: Mini frac testing (DFIT), the flowing material balance, advanced type curve matching (Blasingame, Fetkovich), well testing (PTA) and Rate Transient Analysis (RTA). Interesting class studies using actual field data will reviewed. Review of EOR for the Unconventional will be discussed. A course hand-out which is an excellent reference will be provided.
