The question of what is a log of course can be answered fairly easily if you think of logs in their original sense that was a written record of a voyage such as a ship’s log a travel log you might have seen movies or made your own slideshows on your own travel logs and most people would have taken photographs and kept a log or record of their voyage a well log is merely a record of a voyage into a well bore and it can consist of a wire line log logs that are run while drilling things that are obtained at the well site such as our sample log strip logs and in fact a record of almost anything versus depth or time could be considered to be a log here’s a more formal definition of a well log they could be run on wire line it could be run while drilling most of the logs that we will work with in this exercise material will be wire line logs but the distinction between wire line and logging while drilling today is rather small we can use either kind of log to do the mathematical analysis of porosity and water saturation and lithology without distinguishing too much how these logs were acquired the recording of wire line well log is quite an involved process the first thing that you’ll find at a well site will be the logging unit itself on land this is a truck containing a computerized set of logging equipment a winch that has a cable on it the cable is strung in the welderic and run into the bore hole at the end of the cable is the logging tool set it often has numerous measurement systems on a single set of tools in the well bore on offshore rigs the logging unit will be what’s called a skid unit or offshore unit it’s permanently on the rig but contains the same equipment the computer the winch the cable and of course the logging tools strung at the end of the cable the illustrations here try to show that on a land-based system right hand side of the screen you’ll see the logging unit the rig and the tools in the well bar the larger image in the middle of the screen shows a cutaway view of a logging truck with the computer in the recorder cab and the winch at the back of the truck.
