What you will learn

  • Provides insights and specific quantitative calculation sequence for shales gas analysis.
  • Provides “computer ready” mathematics.
  • Answer oriented results, with quality control guided by core assays.

Description

This course covers visual and numerical log analysis methods for evaluating shale gas reservoirs with mature kerogen. We distinguish shale gas from shaly sands with gas and laminated shaly sands with gas by the presence of adsorbed gas associated with the kerogen in a shale gas zone. You will learn the specialized knowledge required to calculate free gas and adsorbed gas volumes and how to calibrate this result to core analysis, Rock Eval (TOC), and XRD mineralogy data. Examples specific to this environment are provided.

Prerequisites

  • Crain’s Integrated Petrophysics, Lectures 1 to 11 and 27 or equivalent background.
  • Basic understanding of geology and logging tool response.

Curriculum

  • Shale Gas Basics
  • Sorption Isotherms For Shale Gas
  • Adsorbed Gas In Place
  • Log Analysis Model for Gas Shale
  • Shale Volume in Gas Shale
  • Kerogen Volume in Gas Shale
  • Effective Porosity in Gas Shale
  • Water Saturation in Gas Shale
  • Calibration to Core Data
  • Free Gas in Place
  • Multi-Mineral Model for Gas Shales
  • Gas Shale Analysis Example
