What you will learn

  • Understanding of the various methods for identifying fractured reservoirs
  • Procedures for qualitative evaluation and calculations of fracture intensity
  • Insight into fracture geometry and continuity
  • Myths about “fracture porosity”
  • Exercises and worked examples for further study

Description

This course continues coverage of basic petrophysical analysis by looking at qualitative and quantitative evaluation of open-hole logs for artifacts caused by natural and induced fractures. You will learn to recognize these artifacts on both modern image logs, as well as older logs buried in your well files. Some quantitative models that may be instructive are included. Examples and a case history illustrate the topic.

Prerequisites

  • Crain’s Integrated Petrophysics, Lectures 1 to 11 or equivalent background.
  • Basic understanding of geology and well logging.

Curriculum

  • Fractured Reservoirs Basics
  • Definition of Fractures
  • Locating Fractures With Conventional Logs
  • Locating Fractures With Image Logs
  • Case Histories
  • Quantifying Fractures
  • Calculating Fracture Intensity
  • The Double Porosity Model in Fractured Reservoirs
  • Exercise 12
